In January of 1987, one of the worst railway disasters in history occurred on the East Coast. Three freight locomotives collided with a passenger train, leaving 16 passengers dead and 170 injured. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that one of the freight crews smoked marijuana prior to the accident. Settlements were reached in civil action lawsuits against the companies and, after pleading guilty to manslaughter, the freight company's engineer was sentenced to five years in prison. |
